New EUNPDC Paper by Alexander Ghionis and Alexander Kelle on key CWC issues for the EU

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new EUNPDC paper by CBWNet Associate Researcher Alexander Ghionis and Network Coordinator Alexander Kelle, which examines the European Union's role in key issues regarding implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) following its Fifth Review Conference in 2023.

This paper reviews the EU's initiatives to strengthen CWC implementation across five areas: Upholding the norm against chemical weapons use, adapting the verification regime, capacity building, organizational governance, and external engagement. It highlights the post-conference challenges and opportunities for the EU, suggesting targeted recommendations to leverage its influence through diplomatic pressure, funding instruments, partnerships, and reform advocacy. The authors emphasize the need for the EU's active involvement to revitalize norms, build capacity, enable organizational change/evolution, and strengthen partnerships for more effective CWC implementation.
