CBWNet Expert Workshop on Great Power Competition and the Norms of the CBW Prohibition Regimes
On 8-9 May 2023, CBWNet organized an expert workshop in Berlin discussing Great Power Competition and the Norms of the CBW Prohibition Regimes.
Facilitating this workshop is an integral part of the implementation of Work Package 5 (link to WPs page), which aims at an analysis of the interests and actions of central actors in the CBW regime since the end of the East-West conflict, and how these relate to the key norms of the regimes.
The event brought together country experts in foreign and security policies of the great powers and experts from the CBW communities. Over four panels, participants discussed the general approaches of the great powers towards each other, broader concepts of international order, global governance and multilateralism, as well as the positions taken and policies pursued by these actors vis-a-vis and as participants in the two CBW prohibition regimes. The workshop concluded with a change in perspective and discussion about the effects of the evolving geopolitical landscape on the central norms of the two CBW regimes.
